I'm a bit confused about about the usage of the terms Digital Game Based Learning an Serious Games.
Can someone explain where U see the differences and characteristics of each?
For me it seems that SG aims the simulation thing (put in the congtext of a game), implemented on a technical basis from game-toolboxes, whereas DGBL are "real" games, that provide some educational content, often in a secondary way....
What do you think?
Thank You! |

I think both terms are used in the wider context and can have similar meanings
Van Eck http://www.educause.edu/ir/library/pdf/erm0620.pdf uses DGBL to cover:
students building games from scratch
educators building games from scratch
COTS (commercial off the shelf games)
Serious Games is often associated with the second meaning |

hi tony, and thank you for your valuable link - very interesting article!
I dont know if there is any existing differentiation of the two terms....and maybe they are overlapping in many cases...
But is it absurd to see a conceptional difference between, let's say dimenxian and Americas Army - where the first is a "conventional" game which contains several components that help to understand mathematical principals WHILE playing a game, and the latter is a "simulation" and training of a desired activity.
